Owner Interview

Juan Vasquez: Underground Utilities - Estimator and Project Manager

What sparked your interest in construction and led you to pursue it as a career?

Being able to solve some of the complexities and challenges that come with each project is pretty nice. I also would hear stories from dad about construction growing up and it was always nice to see how he would fix issues on projects.

Can you share a memorable experience from your early days in the construction industry?

I would say, working on the Chisholm Trail Parkway and driving on it today is a come full circle type of thing.

How do you balance the physical demands of your job with your personal life and hobbies?

It’s pretty hard to balance that. It’s either waking up super early to get some exercise in or going right before sundown to avoid the Texas heat.

Have you ever had a funny or unexpected moment on a construction site that you can share?

Hearing my brother talk to water meters as he would put them in was always funny.

What's the most challenging project you've worked on, and how did you overcome obstacles?

I would say it’s between building my own house from ground up, Chisholm Trail Parkway, and a rehab job in Addison. In either case, grit and persistence were what got me through the obstacles.

Do you have any role models or mentors in the construction industry? If so, how have they influenced your career?

My dad is probably the single most influential person when it comes to construction. He’s showed me that there is ALWAYS a way to get things done. He’s a magician and his true passion is operating heavy equipment.

If you could build anything in the world, what would it be and why?

A bigger house because the one we have is too small.

How do you stay updated on new construction techniques, materials, and technologies?

Always reading up on new materials is good. As time goes by, things change and we have to adapt so it’s just the nature of the business.

Can you share a project that you're particularly proud of and explain why it stands out to you?

Building my own house from the ground up will always be special. The only thing I hired out was the rough-in plumbing. I completed everything else.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in construction?

Be the type of person your boss has to rein in. Be at the front, pulling the wagon, not the one sitting on it, making everyone else pull your weight.
